The EHB Hockey Level 1 course will result in you becoming an accredited Level 1 coach. This is the minimum qualification for those who are involved in hockey coaching sessions working under supervision '','' for example, a EHB Level 2 coach may be working on another part of the pitch and will assume responsibility for the session.
The EHB Level 1 Award is intended to provide the essential skills and knowledge necessary to run a safe and enjoyable session for players to be introduced to the game. Candidates must be a minimum of 16 years old to attend the course but should understand that they will not be permitted to coach independently. EHB Level 1 coaches aged 18 and over can obtain insurance and practice in the role of Coaching Assistant alongside a fully qualified adult holding a EHB Level 2 coach award or above.
As part of the EHB National Coaching Certificate the Level One is a Coaching Assistant award and all Level 1 coaches will be able to coach under the supervision of a more senior coach.
Level 1 is suitable for those with some experience of playing hockey and perhaps with practice in helping in a coaching or teaching environment. The course length is a minimum of 17 hours contact time and is run over a minimum of three separate occasions. A formal (summative) assessment is included within the course along with a short theory exam paper and the candidate will be informed after assessment if they have been awarded the qualification.
The candidate can expect the tutor to introduce:
Basic techniques
Principles of play
Use of small-sided games
The rules of the game
Underpinning theory knowledge
Skills to create a safe, enjoyable and effective environment
Candidates are advised to gain an Emergency 1st Aid certificate and attend a scUK Good Practice and Child Protection Course or equivalent as soon as possible following the course.
Those qualified at EHB Level 1 will not be entitled to coach independently; they should only coach those skills that they are qualified to coach. More advanced skills require additional training to ensure safe and effective coaching. It is appropriate for EHB Level 1 coaches to be working with juniors, school teams and lower level club teams.
